The Kenny Hill New World Player Classical P640S offers the serious amateur a top-notch instrument that rivals guitars costing much more, not only in terms of sound and playability, but also materials and workmanship. Constructed with a 640mm scale length facilitating easier playability as a result of the compressed spacing between the frets. The shorter scale length in no way affects the instrument's sound performance. The P640 is an excellent guitar for players with smaller hands or those facing reach challenges with the more common 650mm scale instruments.
Designed by master luthier Kenny Hill, each Player P640S is meticulously crafted to Kenny's specifications in a boutique shop in China that he set up, and by a team of artisans, some of whom he personally trained. Don't underestimate these instruments just because they were built offshore. These are all solid Indian rosewood back and sides and solid spruce top guitars with Spanish cedar necks, ebony fretboards and a very thin PU finish. They are tastefully appointed with dyed and natural wood purflings, rosewood bindings, and an attractive traditional motif rosette. A two-way adjustable truss-rod allows enables fine-tuning the action for optimal playability. The Player P640S is definitely a cut above just about anything you will find in this price range. While these guitars are set up by Kenny and his team in his Ben Lomond, California workshop, we give them a once-over in our shop to optimize them further if necessary. Comes with a deluxe hardshell case with a carrying strap.
Review- Hill Player 640 scale/ spruce top
Right off the bat I want to say, this is a really nice guitar. Chuck did a really nice set up and inspection of the guitar. Great job!! Kenny Hills player guitars are super!
About a half year ago I was searching for a classic guitar for myself. I've played guitar earlier in my life ( started in about 4th grade around 1959). It all started with a mahogany Martin guitar my mom bought me new for $94. Lessons followed. My interest turned to folk music- mostly chords and singing. But, I always wanted to learn classical style. Many years later now, I found All Strings Nylon online and found I liked what I read about this dealer. Being a luthier himself, Chuck offered more than just sending the client a guitar.
I noticed he sells Cordoba Master Series Guitars made just down the coast from me in Oxnard! I loved the idea of owning one.Chuck listened to me and heard my story. I liked the idea of a shorter scale guitar (640) and was looking to the Torres. Chuck talked to me a bit about the Player guitars. Although made in China, he suggested it was a really nice guitar. So, I let the idea simmer for a bit. In the meantime I got a Cordoba C10 to start with. But, I still wanted a really amazing guitar.
So, after a few months I called Chuck and said I was interested in the Player ( even though in talking with Kenny Hill he said the C10 was like his Player, but he said he thought his were maybe a bit better in his opinion). Well, Chuck assured me Kenny was being very modest. He told me the C10 was nice but the Player would surprise me. Okay, so I'm going on too much, but it all leads to this…
Chuck was absolutely right. The spruce top 640 Player is a killer guitar! Shipped from the east coast to Santa Barbara, the package arrived in perfect shape. Inspecting it, it looked perfect. Coming to me with a nice letter ( great touch!) Chuck said he worked a bit more even though it came to him in great shape to begin with . He just made it better. He polished the frets, and checked the intonation, worked on the action and measured everything. I agree with him, it is a wonderful machine. The lower, middle and upper registers are all bright (yet warm) with good sustain.
I bought a tuner that works on the iPhone and iPad. I talked with Chuck and told him when I get the guitar in really good tune it's just amazing, the top actually comes alive and resonates. It's really amazing!! The whole machine just sings!
I think, but I'm not sure, because I haven't played a really expensive guitar, but I'd bet my bottom dollar, this guitar would rival many of them.
I want to just add a special thank you, to you Chuck (and Kenny Hill ) for your fine work. Kenny Hill’s artisans in China are making class guitars with his oversight. Chuck, your attention to detail and hearing your customers’ wishes, and identifying a fit of a guitar to customers’ wishes made this experience, for me, a great one. I want to add Chuck is very accessible and enjoyable to talk with to tell you the truth. I'd do it all again ( who knows, maybe someday I will).

The Kenny Hill Player is a wonderful instrument. It is hard to believe that you can get such a quality guitar at this price. The tone, intonation and playability are superb. Everyone who hears it is really impressed. Chuck took the time to work with me so I got the guitar that was a good fit. This kind of service and care is what makes ASN really outstanding. Thanks!
